What We're Reading, Eating & Watching | September 2023
A delicious digest of satisfying suggestions...
It’s already September… how did that happen? Here’s another edition of our free monthly digest shining a light on some of the best things we’ve eaten, cooked, listened to, watched/streamed or read recently that we hope will inspire you.
Watching
If you haven’t yet caught Fisk on Netflix we’d highly recommend, which is a workplace comedy kind of like Kath & Kim meets The Office. Super droll and totally binge-able. We also had never seen 2016’s The Founder all about the rise of McDonalds so really enjoyed that recently –– naturally as fried food aficionados it’s so up our street it’s parked on our driveway. Finally, to Scandinavia and the long unsolved case of the assassination of Swedish PM Olof Palme is covered in The Man Who Played With Fire (NowTV), which delves into the late writer Stieg Larsson’s obsession and findings which were more conclusive than police investigations.
As you already know we’ve been delving into S15 of MasterChef Australia and loving it –– three weeks through its broadcast, you can follow all our Under Bench Staples podcast episodes wherever you get your podcasts: Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Goodpods, Amazon Music, Pocketcasts…
Eating
For Russell’s solo escapades for Dublin Delish (tune in every Tuesday, 10:30am on the Suzanne Kane & Brian Dowling show on Dublin’s 98FM) he’s been skulling smoked sandwiches at Tír Deli on Hatch Street, sinking sensational scoops at Murphy’s Ice Cream on Wicklow Street, propping up the hatch at Dublin Pizza Co on Aungier Street and hightailing it to Happy’s on Aston Quay.
Over in our Sunday Times Ireland restaurant review column, August kicked off with Lotties in Rathmines and concluded with Variety Jones in Dublin 8. In between we hightailed it to Kinsale for a 10/10 meal at Saint Francis Provisions as well as a nip up north to dreamy cafe Neighbourhood (from some of the same team who steered the ship at Established). Don’t forget –– Paid subscribers have access to our exclusive map of restaurants we’ve written about around Ireland, there’s over 125 inclusions 👀
We mentioned in our last mailer about Patrick penning more travel for the Sunday Times and continuing the mini series of ‘36 Hours In…’ itineraries was Galway and then Belfast. Both choc full of up-to-date recommendations. These guides are probably where we’ve squeezed the most information into the shortest space… ever!
Listening: Podcasts Aplenty!
If you’ve been following And Just Like That’s second season, can we please recommend this accompanying podcast The Writers Room? It’s a brilliant companion listen and lots of fantastic insight into stuff on- and off-screen. We’ve also loved hearing Cherry Bombe’s vision for the next decade and exciting investment plans with this episode of host/founder Kerry Diamond and CEO Kate Miller Spencer.
Other podcasts we’re loyal listeners of include Olive, the Olive Magazine podcast and the BBC World Service’s The Food Chain. For the former, we loved Helen Graves’ chat with host Janine Ratcliffe which really simplified grilling year-round and the power of smoke and char in food. For the latter, check out this episode on the power of ‘heritage’ brands like Angostura Bitters and Tabasco. That last suggestion segues stunningly into a share of our latest in the series of Condiment Curiosity –– all about spicy boi, sriracha!
